Repost- Money $eries Week: Relationship

Relationships are essential to our lives. They are crucial to our development, growth, and existence. They are so crucial that the Ten Commandments show us how we are to protect our relationship with God and our relationships with others. Jesus takes it a step further by instructing us “to Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[a] 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31)

Today, however, we will talk about OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH MONEY.

There are some of us who have healthy relationships with money and some of us who do not. Let us talk about the unhealthy relationships with money some of us have. Money controls some of us. Money leads us toward making poor decisions. Money runs away from us and it spends all of its time with our bills and/or bad habits. Money makes us feel good–until it goes away.

Okay, let’s not put all the blame on money and make this one-sided. We are at fault for having money control the relationship. Moreover, we don’t see its worth. We don’t value it. We don’t get to know it. We either have unrealistic expectations, too little expectations, or too high expectations of our money. And we don’t tell our money what we expect it to accomplish. We don’t see our money’s potential. We don’t invest in it. We don’t let it rest. We don’t even let it just sit and catch its breath sometimes. We don’t use wisdom and care when handling it. Then we expect it to do what we need it to do and be what we need it to be.

What about our management of someone else’s money (credit cards). We pretend its fully ours until its time to pay it back. Then we get stressed and our finances look even more a mess.

Stats: Pew Charitable Trusts reports that 80% of Americans are with debt. (www.pewtrusts.org)

But God desires for our relationship with money to not be a stressful, debilitating one, but a healthy one. He desires that money not master us and that we trust in Him, the One who supplies all of our needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).

Today’s Scriptures:

Mark 12:30-31 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Prayer:

Lord, please help us to have a healthy relationship with money. We desire to serve You and not money. Break the yokes of poor stewardship and debt in our lives. Forgive us for building such a dependence on earthly things and for our love of money. Help us to trust and depend on You and to love You with all of our hearts. In Jesus’ name, amen.

We sincerely hope you have been enjoying this week’s Money $eries and they have made an impact on you. We have been blessed to share tips, facts, prayers, and the Word of God on such a crucial, favorite topic in this world–money. This evening we are presenting a special Q (Tannika) & A (Shalamaar). Shalamaar Muhammad is a Commercial Banking Professional with JP Morgan and fellow Christian who loves to share financial wisdom with others. Enjoy our Q & A as well as take notes.

Tannika: What is the one mistake people tend to make the most with their finances?

Shalamaar: Live outside their means. People tend to buy things that they don’t need to impress people they don’t like.

Tannika: As a fellow believer, what are some things you want Christians to understand about money.

Shalamaar: As a fellow believer, I would say remember that the love of money is the root of all evil. Money should be looked at and used as a tool to meet your needs and the needs of others. Also give to purpose and not just need all the time. People who repeat the same cycles of bad money management usually have an underlying issue that needs to be addressed and resolved, and if it isn’t, the need will always continue.

Tannika: What are the major areas of finance people should also be concerned with than just paying bills?

Shalamaar: Other than paying bills, use your finances to save (emergency fund, nest egg).

Invest- Earn a return on your money.

Give- Help meet others’ needs as God meets yours.

Tannika: Dave Ramsey, financial guru and Christian, encourages every one to have an emergency fund. Why do we fail at building an emergency fund?

Shalamaar: We fail at building an emergency fund because we don’t want to make the necessary sacrifices to do so. Think about how many restaurant meals, unnecessary shopping trips, vacations and other luxuries we could have given up over a year to build the fund. A year goes by so fast, so cutting back for a while is a minor sacrifice in the grand scheme of life. Letting go of instant gratification can help build up that fund and save you the headache of looking for additional funds at the time of emergency.

Tannika: Explain what it means to invest your money and the best way to do so?

Shalamaar: Investing your money can mean so many things. In the most simple terms, it means to earn a return on your money. It can be a conservative investment such as a simple interest savings or CD or complex such as investment in stocks and bonds. It’s best to speak with a professional such as a Financial Advisor to learn more about what investment best suits you.

Tannika: What is the best financial advice you received growing up?

Shalamaar: The best financial advice I received growing up was not to use credit as extra money. Credit can be helpful but there are also dangers if you are not responsbile, live beyond your means, or do not have self-control.

Dangers of Credit

Overdoing it; borrowing more than you can afford to repay.
If you don’t make your payments on time, you’ll damage your credit record.
Losing money on late fees.
Having to pay additional interest.
Difficulty getting loans or credit in the future.
Once your credit is damaged, it can take years and tons of extra money to restore it.

Wow, thanks to Shalamaar for blessing us with loads of knowledge about emergency funds, investing and debt as well as the dangers of credit!

What are you taking away from today’s post? How will you apply what Shalamaar has shared with us to your new financial journey?

Today’s Scripture:

Jeremiah 17:7‭-‬8 NIV “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord , whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

Luke 16:10-12 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your wisdom. Let me seek You and Your wisdom as well as Your Will to be done in my life. Help me to, for here on out, see money the way You do and to use it for Your glory and in Your wisdom. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Throw The Whole Mindset Away

“Out with the old, in with the new” is a popular saying. When a new year touches down, you want to leave behind in the past year everything old and weighty that caused you so much grief, frustation, and disappointment. So why can’t we leave behind old habits and mindsets that keep us weighed down and pennyless?

Tight

This January, if our financial part of our lives were rooms, they would be an empty room of compact four walls closing in on us, or is that just mine. After Christmas and an unexpected bill, I knew it would be tight and I expected to make it through with some sweat. However, with getting back into debt and having credit card balances again, I have been sweating a lot. Nonetheless, I am expecting to recover or at least stop the walls from closing in on me with prayer and planning.

But what about families or individuals who have to bury loved ones. It is much difficult for them to recover. One of my former students was faced with burying her beloved mom with no monies available for a funeral and burial. How disheartening it is to not only be grieving the loss of a loved one, but also stress over coming up with the money to take care of their beloved’s burial.

Don’t Just Talk The Talk

January was a tough month, and not just financially, but it has also left me to realize I carried into 2018 some old habits and ideologies that I did not fully nip in the bud, which have hindered me from truly rectifying my financial situations. I merely did on the surface work.

And for one, I can’t talk a good walk financially, get free from debt once minus student loans, clear up credit card debt twice, and save emergency fund technically twice only to keep the same habits and go down the same halls I know not to take. So, in actuality I am going around in circles. Now, I must say this. We are not perfect and will make mistakes, but we must admit our habits and ways that are hindering us from making true progress. “I want to create wealth” I heard myself telling the bank rep and “be debt free” but I needed a temporary short loan. Ludicrous. A loan to pay a bill and if honest to spend to add to more debt. For my situation, it was a no-go. I got denied the loan but am thankful because I have to trust God and put away old habits and actually walk the walk of what it is I am learning and sharing with others.

Father God, create in us a clean heart and renew a right spirit within us. Let us see money the way You do and let us get our financial affairs in order. We don’t know what the future holds, and Lord, we want to trust You and depend on You. Help us to seek You for wisdom to be prepared as well as help us to become better and godly stewards over all You have blessed us with. Let us be blessed to be a blessing too knowing that You have entrusted us to gifts, talents, time, and financial resources not just for ourselves but for others and Your kingdom. Let us owe no man nothing except love. Let us also have a heart of gratitude and be content in any situation. In Jesus’ name, amen!

So what’s our top 10 financial things we need to work towards in 2018.

1. Pray and meditate on the Word of God and His principles on money, tithing, giving, etc.

2. Seek the Holy Spirit for wisdom and guidance on when and how to give to others, how to sow and reap, how to invest, how to be a blessing to others, and just how to steward over what God has given us.

3. Start Saving. I don’t care if it is a jar of change. Or just dollars. Start and stay consistent. Put money in a bank account rarely used and assign those savings with a purpose.

4. Start an emergency fund. Unexpectedly, the car breaks down, the furnace goes out, your property taxes go up, we need to travel or want to bless someone, boom. We have something to work with.

5. Budget and cut some stuff out or down. Do we need to eat at a restaurant every day, do we need that other channel subscription alongside of Netflix? Do we need a new pair of shoes or a new pair of jeans every month? Do we want to just have stuff or do we want memories and moments?

6. Declutter our house. Sell or give away that stuff to others in need. I am a firm believer, that in order to make room for the new, we have to make space for it. So if we do want a new dress, check the closet for dresses we may have not worn in awhile and either embrace them again, give them away, or sell them. Their are avenues like the thrift store and Ebay who will buy or take and allow us to sell these things.

7. Invest. Research investing, stocks, and talk to professionals on such. And then start somewhere. We can even invest in pennystocks. Robinhood is a great investment source especially for beginners and pennystocks.

8. Talk about finances with the family, expectations, teamwork, goals, and create a financial plan.

9. Get life insurance. Point blank and period.

10. Stay consistent. Keep pressing. Be patient. Don’t give up.

M.I.A

The M.I.A (Most Important Accessory) that a Christian should have in their possession is GODLY STEWARDSHIP. It is something we don’t hang up or sport from time to time, but something we must wear daily, second by second, minute by minute. Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written, “He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it. Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce. And seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

My Thoughts On This|Simone Biles Tweet

https://www.essentiallysports.com/us-sports-news-olympics-news-gymnastics-news-my-year-off-is-killing-her-simone-biles-mother-grew-restless-as-she-took-her-first-ever-extended-break-from-gymnastics-in-2017/

I read the title of the article and just had to click on it.

I am so glad that Momma Biles indeed felt safe to express herself about her daughter’s break, sabbatical, temporary journey without gymnastics. It was indeed a “fun exchange” between her and her mother/grandmother.

However, I felt led to say a prayer for Simone Biles and Momma Biles.

I believe Simone took a break to not only give her body a rest but for her mental health also. And I am glad she did this for herself.

This space of time will allow her several things. One, it gives her the time to refresh and heal her body. I am no gymnasts but I am sure their bodies go through a lot.

Two, this break will give her the time to practice self-care at a certain rhythm. Self-care at the rhythm or pace she needs and desires. And not just self-care physically but emotionally and mentally.

Three, she is young and this time off can help her to also figure out what she wants the next season in her life to look like. It is her destiny or purpose to be a gymnast but I believe we as humans can only see a small picture of things as God sees the bigger picture, and He has far greater than what we can ever imagine. God has more for her to do and be. Let her explore those things as God leads her so she can fulfill her full destiny.

And listen ladies or gents, it is never too late to find or create space to discover yourself and the rest of the pieces to your destiny. You may need to create space just to rest up and get some things in order. So, it doesn’t matter how old you are. If you need a pause, do so and with purpose.

As for Momma Biles, I pray she realizes that although Simone is a part of her destiny or purpose, God has more for her also. This is a great time for her too to explore how she wants the next season of her life to look. Rest Momma Biles, also. All of us need periods of time where we rest, allow God to restore us and refresh us. Find some new things you like to do and see old things you put down that you like to do. Know that God is the source to your destiny and the source to your fulfillment. And keep an eye out for the Lord sending you more young ladies to inspire and motivate towards greatness. But in the meantime, allow your child to discover herself, heal, grow, and prepare for the next season (not that you are not).

Take one day at a time,

Tannika

Let It Surface

I am so excited about completing my new book. I didn’t know it would lead to the theme it has now, but God has me on a healing journey and the title change was so imperative. This healing journey has been one that has been lengthy, uncomfortable, challenging, yet imperative, enlightening, and such a blessing. I have discovered, thanks to the Holy Spirit and His grace to not abandon the process as well as so many things about myself. I have learned some triggers to my anxiety and where certain fears began. I am also learning to trust God and receive His unfailing love. I am learning to see myself the way God does. Moreover, prayer, learning to be transparent with God as well with others, facing my fears (one at a time), the Word of God, therapy, learning to be more present with myself, others and God are some things that have been crucial to this journey. (Note: I am still a work in progress.) Writing is another component of this journey and it has served as an outlet to express myself, learn, and cope. I have realized that my writing also serves as a tool to encourage others. My book, Bring It To The Surface, is not only full of poetic inspiration and encouragement but a journal to help you too to start your journey of healing and provide a space for self-reflection.

If you are feeling empty or lost, hurt or hopeless, stripped or depleted, know God who began a good work in you shall continue to perform it until the day of Christ Jesus. Know that He will also never leave you, nor forsake you. Whatever it is the enemy has killed, stolen, and destroyed in your life, God can revive, recover, and restore. And in order to heal and receive the abundant life Jesus came to give us, we have to allow God to bring some things to the surface. We can trust God who first loved us and gave His only begotten Son in order for you and me to have an eternal love and life. So, let the healing begin. Confess it, express it and then address it. God can handle your pain and God can provide the answers you need. I am so excited for this book to reach your hands and heart, and I pray you allow God to bring some things to the surface.

Bring It To The Surface

Winter Season

Even with the grandeur of a beautiful landscape, winter can be daunting

Cold weather and possible blizzards are haunting

We await this season where things seem to halt in growth or decline in activity

Due to the strains of the weather and much passivity

Winter breaks and days off

Are alluring

Especially when life has you worn out

The mind and body needs curing

But all seasons are a part of our lives

They come and they go

Winter can be dreary

When the cool winds blow

It requires much wait and a little more press

Don’t forget the Sun seems to not shine its best

But during this season God can still bless

And although winter ushers in either fast or slow

There are lessons to learn

Knowledge to know

Opportunities to grow

And some moments to yield to

And to be still through

And know that He is God

The Great I Am

Faithful and true

To the bush and the ram

He is able to lead me and you

Winter seasons don’t have to bring blisters

Or give you frostbite

If you, through even the cloudiest of days,

Fix your sight

Upon Jesus Christ

Don’t get caught up in the decorations and traditions

And miss the moment to listen

Don’t procrastinate in preparing for the cold

And don’t abandon the process

As things disappear

Only to make things crystal clear

And make room for growth

God made the spring and the winter

Appreciate them both

For after wintery transitions and seasons to abound

New flowers and fruit will break free from the ground

New life and new lessons and all for the glory of a wise God

and a reigning King

Trust Him through the winter

And welcome the joy, hope, endurance, perseverance and character it brings

Changes And Challenges

change

Changes and Challenges will come as quick and unexpectedly

as a Chicago winter,

Embracing you like a warm touch

or piercing you like a splinter

Fear lurks

when patience and faith are absent,

And embracing life outside your comfort zone

can be taxing

Think for a second about the plans you made

some plans we create will be interrupted or halted

only to be changed or necessarily rearranged in proper fit

because change is always approaching and sometimes coming quick

You can’t control what happens to your life,

You will learn through time

that you have most control over what you do,

and how you react to

than some of the challenges that come for you

So to whom it may concern,

Hold onto your grace,

Life isn’t always comfortable

and things don’t always go your way,

Sometimes we settle for the ordinary

because the unknown can be scary

Sometimes we let fear take control

because it is comfortable and that’s all we know

Yet embracing change allows us to grow

And trusting in God through the challenges and the process

Reminds us that God is the same today, yesterday and tomorrow, and He knows best

He has the strength and authority to get you through any discomfort and any mess

Change allows us to stretch, elevate and spread our wings,

to venture toward new territories and experience new things

to leave comfort zones, same actions, same results and same old ways behind

Growth comes from challenges,

but transformation must start with the renewing of your mind

As always, I love to give and here are some Tools for your Journey!

I don’t have any tools to share, but I did come across this prayer on Pinterest and thought I should share it! Take time to pray this and talk to God about your fears concerning change and the unknown. Ask Him for help to embrace new seasons, trials and all, and to trust Him through it all.
